CLERKSHIPS IN NEUROLOGY
The neurology clerkship is an opportunity for students to gain a greater understanding of how the brain connects with the spinal cord, nerves, and muscles to allow you to do what you do. Students will leave with a greater appreciation of how you move, when you speak, why you feel, what you think, and who you see. Over the course of 4 weeks students will directly interact with patients who have disorders such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, migraine, tumors, and neuropathies that affect the ability to do the “who”, “what”, “when”, “why”, and “how” that makes us human.
While neurology clerkships throughout the United States have a standardized medical curriculum, clerkships in military treatment facilities have several unique benefits. First, military medicine is a relatively closed system; the physicians we train will be practicing with us for large portions of their career, therefore there is a very strong emphasis on education and commitment to service. Second, we get to take care of the some of the bravest, brightest, and best young men and women in the world who deserve top-notch medical care to ensure that they can continue their mission of maintaining our freedom and safety. Third, military neurologists are not only physicians, they are military officers so students in clerkships at the MTFs will also be instructed on how to develop into leaders and professionals. Lastly, students completing a neurology clerkship in an MTF do not have to deal with the never-ending stress of “what should I wear today?” and “do these shoes go with these pants?” USU neurology clerkship students rotating in the MTF’s already have a perfectly color coordinated outfit!
The clerkship is offered at military sites all across the country including California, Washington, Florida, Texas, Virginia, Maryland, and the District of Columbia. Students may also chose to do the clerkship at facilities throughout the world including Korea, Japan, and Germany.
