RESIDENCY IN NEUROLOGY
For those who are passionate about neuroanatomy, problem solving, and brain function, the military offers three neurology residency training programs. The residency is 3 years in duration after completion of the intern year. Through direct patient encounters, didactic sessions, and research opportunities, residents expand upon and refine their neurologic exam skills, localization skills, and knowledge of common and uncommon disorders of the central and peripheral nervous system as well as neurologic manifestations of systemic diseases. They can become skilled at doing procedures such as lumbar puncture, skin biopsy, botulinum toxin injections, transcranial doppler, and electromyography. Residents at all three programs are also strongly encouraged to participate in and pursue research interests.
There are three military neurology residencies in the Department of Defense. The National Capital Region program is located at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. This is a program for Army and Navy trainees, however at times Air Force residents have been trained. The second program is at San Antonio Military Medical Center in San Antonio, TX. This program is for Air Force applicants. The third program is at Madigan Army Medical Center in Ft. Lewis, WA. This program is for Army applicants. Residents receive several one-on-one contact hours with senior physicians who specialize in epilepsy, movement disorders, dementia, sleep disorders, demyelinating disorders, muscle and nerve disorders, and disorders of the autonomic nervous system. In addition to traditional neurology education, residents will receive training on how neurologic disorders may impact military service, training on how to provide care to patients in austere environments, and education on leadership development.
