Program Description
The Health Informatics and Information Sciences (HIIS) Distance Learning Certificate Program aims to expand upon the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) mission of providing high-quality online education to military service members and civilian healthcare professionals in the Military Health System (MHS) to support the readiness of America's Warfighters and their dependents.
The mission of the HIIS Program is to equip MHS/Department of Defense (DoD) personnel, including military and civilian professionals (contractors are excluded), with the knowledge and skills to manage and utilize health information technology, health information sciences, health information systems, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and data and visualization in health services research for efficient healthcare delivery in the MHS and beyond. This program commits to providing high-quality education, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, and addressing the needs of internal and external stakeholders in the MHS.
The Program is under the purview of the Health Policy and Management Division of the Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics Department. The expected time for completion will range from 12 months (fast track) to up to 36 months (flexible track).

Eligibility:
- Full-time students currently enrolled in academic programs at USU with usush.edu and canvas accounts are eligible for the certificate program at this time.
- Applicants should possess, at a minimum, a Baccalaureate degree from an accredited academic institution before matriculation at USU.
- Candidates will be evaluated for admission based on a variety of criteria. In addition to academic fitness for graduate work, previous roles within informatics and health information technology, and how likely they are to use this education to further the tactical, operational, or strategic objectives of the DOD, or the broader U.S. government, with respect to health informatics and information sciences.
- Applicants should ideally possess a strong mathematical, data, or coding background.
