WHAT WE DO

Our department offers structured instructional opportunities in basic laboratory research for interested medical students, residents, and fellows to include Capstone projects. We develop and conduct laboratory and clinical research across the spectrum of Women’s Health.

More About Our Research

The GYN Cancer Center of Excellence leverages innovative research to enhance gynecologic cancer care from prevention to survivorship for service members, beneficiaries, and the general public.

GYN Cancer Center of Excellence

Our laboratory examines how changes in how the body responds to exogenous psychological or physical stressors contribute to pathological conditions or if they provide evidence of it.

Ovarian and endometrial cancers are biologically heterogeneous diseases. By analyzing the expression of vitamin-D receptors, CYP24A1, and TGF-β signaling proteins as surrogate markers for progesterone and calcitriol treatment response, Dr Syed’s group showed the effectiveness of the treatment in attenuating growth of a wide variety of tumor histotypes.

Over the past 15 years, the the Catherino Lab has focused on understanding the mechanisms involved in fibroid development. We have developed the first and most durable in vitro and in vivo model systems for the study of uterine fibroids, which previously could only be studied as surgical specimens. Using these model systems, we have characterized not only the molecular changes that result in fibroid cell proliferation, but also the extracellular changes that are central to the bulk symptoms.
