CLERKSHIPS IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE
The department offers students two clinical experiences in the specialty of emergency medicine: an optional selective rotation during the core clerkship year and a required a clerkship during the advanced clerkship year. During these four-week experiences, students develop clinical skills to evaluate, manage, and rapidly disposition patients with undifferentiated complaints who request emergency services. Patients of all ages and demographics present with medical and surgical conditions. These rotations are similar to those offered by civilian medical schools, and military medical students are often working with civilian medical students regardless of whether the healthcare facility is part of the Military Health System or not.
According to the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), emergency medicine was a required rotation in only 56% of US medical schools in 2017. The USU School of Medicine strongly believes that skills acquired through standardized basic and advanced life-support courses and at least one four-week exposure to the practice of emergency medicine in hospital-based emergency departments are necessary for every physician, military or civilian, regardless of chosen specialty and career path.
EMERGENCY MEDICINE SELECTIVE
The selective in emergency medicine is designed for students seeking to explore the specialty of emergency medicine as a potential career. The rotation consists of clinical shifts in busy civilian and military emergency departments (EDs) around the country. Didactic and clinical experiences are combined with written reflective assignments. It affords students the chance to learn about the assessment and management of emergency patients while gaining insight into a potential emergency medicine career.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE CLERKSHIP
The required clerkship in emergency medicine is a four-week rotation designed to train senior medical students in the basic tenets of diagnosis and management of emergency medical and surgical conditions. Students work at facilities across the country to hone the skills they will need to effectively manage the challenges of needing to intervene before all desired information can be obtained, efficiently evaluating patients based only on complaints when the diagnosis is unknown, and approaching management and disposition using a different optic. Students will further gain an understanding of the role of emergency medicine in the healthcare system.
