ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF MILITARY AND
EMERGENCY MEDICINE (MEM)

 

Assistant professors of MEM are physicians (MD/DO) or PhD researchers who support the operational MEM community through education, training, clinical work, research, scholarship, institutional and professional activities. Candidates for Assistant Professor:

  • Are involved in the direct or virtual support of USU medical students, uniformed MEM residents and fellows, staff physicians, and colleagues. Educational activities include teaching military medicine and emergency medicine knowledge, skills, leadership, and professionalism. 
  • Have demonstrated potential for achievement and capacity for productivity in the various domains of Scholarship described in USU Instruction 1100A and pictured below:

ELIGIBILITY FOR ASSISTANT PROFESSOR FACULTY RANK

  • Appropriate education degree(s): 
  • MD, DO, who are Board Eligible or Board Certified
  • PhD or “terminal” Masters degree (e.g., MBA, MBE, MPH)
  • Relevant to MEM mission and activities
  • Expected to contribute to MEM, SOM, USU, profession
  • Vetted by Chair, Chair’s designee, OGC, HR
  • Could be:
  • Tenure eligible (possible for civilian FTEs)
  • Tenure-ineligible (all uniformed personnel, part-time, many civilian FTEs)
  • Non-prefixed (no faculty “Pathway” is indicated at this level) 
  • Prefixed (Adjunct, Clinical, Research)
  • Open to Active Duty and Civilian personnel (Federal workers and contractors)
  • After determination of eligibility, application into USU electronic system, and review/approval by Chair or authorized personnel
  • Teaching (Level 1) 
  • Scholarly activities (Discovery, Integration, Application, and/or Teaching/Education) 
  • Service (e.g., clinical work, committees)

Information about tenure eligibility is provided in the USUHS Instruction 1100A. Please note:

● Military faculty positions are tenure ineligible.

● Prefixed appointments are tenure ineligible.

● The tenure-eligible track is restricted to civilian faculty who commit full-time effort and responsibilities to the USU SOM programs, including assigned duties at the SOM-affiliated institutions. Appointment to the tenure-eligible track is based on specific criteria and institutional needs.

  • Continue to engage in scholarship and education and other professional activities
  • Get involved in MEM education and research opportunities
  • Network with other faculty
  • Participate in Faculty Development
  • Prepare for academic promotion
