ABOUT OUR PROGRAM
We instruct medical students in the principles of clinical obstetrics and gynecology in the classroom and the ambulatory and inpatient care settings and participates in the preclinical instruction programs of the basic science departments and interdepartmental courses to promote the principles of women's health in general and obstetrics and gynecology.
In addition to training the next generation of military doctors, we direct faculty participation and support the day-to-day instruction of residents and on-site clinical care at the teaching hospitals in the capital area. Our program also responds to Department of Defense initiatives and departmentally identified academic needs in developing and presenting university sponsored continuing education courses for physicians and other health care providers in military and Public Health Service clinical practice settings.
We partner with/sponsor the following GME training programs:
- National Capital Uniformed Services Residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology
- Gynecologic Oncology Fellowship Program
- Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Fellowship Program
- Urogynecology Fellowship Program
- Minimally Invasive Surgery Fellowship Program

CLERKSHIPS IN OB/GYN
Obstetrics and Gynecology is an exciting and unique specialty offering care for women at all stages of their life. In the span of one day, you may perform a surgery, deliver a baby, evaluate an elderly woman with ovarian cancer, and counsel a 15 year-old about prevention of pregnancy and sexually-transmitted infections. Over the course of 5 weeks students on the OB/GYN clerkship will experience the many sides of this fast-paced and diverse specialty.
In Labor and Delivery, students evaluate patients in triage, follow them through their labor, be involved in the delivering babies, and assist with postpartum care. In the Operating Room, students are exposed to a variety of gynecologic surgical procedures and have hands-on opportunities to assist with surgery. In the Ambulatory Clinic, students practice history gathering, hone physical exams skills and assist with clinic procedures, as well as counsel and educate patients on a variety of women’s health issues including: contraception, sexually transmitted diseases, menstrual irregularities, obstetrical care, and many, many more.
