BRAIN INJURY

Dr. McCabe and his colleagues focus on preclinical modeling of traumatic brain injury (TBI). A number of injury models, including ‘blast’ TBI using the Center for Neuroscience’s Advanced Blast Simulator (ABS), controlled cortical impact (CCI), concussive brain injury (CBI), and Closed-Head Impact Model of Engineered Rotational Acceleration (CHIMERA) are employed. We study the functional (behavioral) and biological effects of these various injuries and testing drugs and compounds that may reduce TBI symptomatology, particularly injury effects related to blood-brain barrier (BBB) and neuroimmune responses. Recent model development indicates the symptoms can last as long as a year, suggesting this approach is appropriate to advance to treatment studies.
