FACULTY APPOINTMENTS AND PROMOTIONS

Academic rank is important both during and after a military career. Faculty appointments in the Department of Medicine at USU are a recognition of academic contributions and service to the mission of educating our students. They are governed by the University, following USU 1100A Instruction.

RANKS AND DESIGNATIONS

  • Instructor and Assistant Professor
  • Associate Professor
  • Professor

PATHWAYS AND PREFIXES

Active-duty faculty are all on a non-tenure track. Faculty appointments for non-tenure track positions are typically categorized into one of several available pathways:

  • Clinician-Educator
  • Clinician-Investigator
  • Research
  • Educator
  • Other prefixes like Adjunct, Distinguished, Visiting, and others are also available.

PROCESS AND SUPPORT

The process for appointment and promotion is detailed in the Instruction. For Instructor and Assistant Professor, the temporary application is online.

At the Associate Professor and Professor levels, appointments or promotions require a more comprehensive review, first within the department and, if you are invited to apply for a higher academic rank, review by the School of Medicine Committee on Appointment, Promotion, and Tenure. Generally, this process begins during the annual Division review or by nomination from your Division Director. You may also contact the Departmental Faculty Appointment faculty or the Department Faculty Academic Appointment & Promotion Specialist with a copy of your CV for review.
