From the Program:

The NMCSD Anesthesiology Residency works hard to provide a supportive, respectful and collegial environment to support residents through their graduate medical education, anesthesia training and personal wellbeing.  Humanitarian, operational, and research opportunities are available for interested residents. 

Your clinical training is enriched with the many out rotations with local and regional civilian medical centers. For example, during your senior rotations at Stanford University, you will take part in heart/lung transplants, advanced vascular procedures and amongst other cardiothoracic experiences.

Our program is in good standing with the ACGME and has a strong academic backbone.  We have a basic and advanced lecture series, journal clubs, monthly academic days, point of care ultrasound curriculum, 1:1 staff : resident supervision for clinical cases which creates a rich environment of academic inquiry with appropriate autonomy.

Introduction to the NMCSD Anesthesiology Residency Experience

  • Class size: 6 residents/year

  • Program Overview and Highlights:

    • Most rotations are at NMCSD, with about 40% of them being away

    • Staff Fellowship trained in Critical Care, Cardiothoracic Anesthesia, Obstetric Anesthesia, Pediatrics, Chronic Pain, Regional Anesthesia

  • About the hospital:

    • Patient Population: Mix of active duty, dependents, and retirees

    • Large multi-specialty MTF, not a trauma center

  • Rotations outside of the medical center:

    • Pediatric Anesthesia: Rady Children's

    • Cardiac Anesthesia: Stanford University with exposure to heart and lung transplants, TEE, and advanced endovascular procedures

    • Cardiac and Surgical ICU: UCSD

    • Trauma & Burn: LA County USC

    • Advanced Clinical Cases: UCSD (with opportunities for liver and kidney transplants) & Veteran’s Administration Hospital La Jolla

    • Electives in Obstetrics, Regional, and Advanced Clinical at Kaiser San Diego

  • About the base:

    • NMCSD (“Balboa Hospital”) is located in proximity to San Diego’s beautiful Balboa Park.  It is a part of the Naval Base San Diego complex.  Other regional bases include Naval Air Station North Island, MCRD, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar, Camp Pendleton.  Operational opportunities abound.  San Diego has a rich military history and a supportive community for its military population.

    • San Diego is a vacation destination with great activities for lovers of the outdoors, those with families, and sun worshipers!

    • World famous San Diego Zoo and Safari Park, Legoland, and Disneyland are day trips

    • Freeway access, with easy travel to beautiful beaches, mountains, and the desert

    • San Diego International Airport

    • Large military presence: NB San Diego, NAS North Island, MCAS, and Camp Pendleton
