The DOD anesthesiology training and career outcomes project examines factors associated with residency and career outcomes of graduates and trainees from the DOD anesthesiology residency training programs from January 1, 1988 to December 31, 2020. The research team aims to identify resident characteristics, resident experiences (e.g., log information) and prior performance factors (e.g., step exam scores) associated with residency (e.g., ITE scores) and career outcomes (e.g., fellowship training, promotion, retention).

This study seeks to conduct a plan-do-study-act quality/performance improvement project that targets sponsorship training in faculty development of USU local and national faculty to improve the equity and justice in USU national faculty representation and promotion. The study includes a preliminary needs assessment, education activity, and site selection process using an online assessment and knowledge dissemination module regarding faculty appointments and promotion, sent to current and prospective USU national faculty members in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Family Medicine. Based on responses from this activity, the study team will develop and pilot a "sponsorship faculty development hub" at 1-3 large military treatment facilities with interested USU national faculty members and obtain feedback via questionnaires to improve the programming. After monitoring and evaluating the questionnaire responses and changes in URM representation of faculty appointments and promotions, the program will be expanded to a train-the-trainer model, in which additional sponsorship faculty development hubs are established and metrics are continually monitored.

The overall goal of this this quality improvement project is to conduct a Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) Quality/Performance Improvement Project that targets expeditionary anesthesiology Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs) education development, dissemination, evaluation, and improvement. Using a multi-phased approach, the first phase included a needs assessment based on reported experiences, training requirements, and training opportunities in active duty anesthesiologist and CRNA providers. The next phase will include education development, followed by education evaluation and improvement.

This study will determine the continuing educational needs of anesthesiology physicians regarding GME fellowship training, and the relevant associations with key variables that may influence the quantity, subspecialty type, and timing of fellowship training as well as military career objectives. The research team aims to determine what the top ranked fellowship specialties are, identify if fellowship interest ratings vary by location, and examine whether or not interest and service extensions associated with age, gender, race, ethnicity, rank, service, years served, years post residency, etc.
