Respiratory Co-Infection and Immunologic Response Study

MED TMU Peds RECON Study graphic

Background

Kids can get infected frequently with respiratory viruses like SARS CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19), Influenza, and RSV.

Children's immune system might respond differently to a viral infection depending on their age, and depending on if they are infected with more than one virus at a time (co-infection). The Peds RECON study will help us learn more about those differences.

Who Can Participate?

  • Children between the ages of 1 month to 17 years old
  • In generally good health with no immunosuppressive conditions
  • Willing and able to complete nasal swabs and blood draws
  • Be able to come to study visits on the NSA Bethesda base

What Does Participation Involve?

Participants will be screened by a physician with a medical history and physical exam and complete a questionnaire about their health.

When participants get a respiratory infection, they will be seen for testing looking for viruses and the immune system response. If they have SARS-CoV-2, Influenza, or RSV, they will be seen for a follow-up visit.

Depending on the type of study visit, participants will give a blood sample, nasal swabs sample, and participants (parents) will complete an online questionnaire about their symptoms.

Visits will take place at the Translational Medicine Unit on NSA Bethesda, a short walk from Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

This study lasts for one or two years. The number of visits will depend on how frequently participants get a viral infection.

Is There a Cost to Participate?

Participation is free of charge. Participants will be compensated for their time and effort. Participants and their families will receive updates regarding circulating viruses and have the opportunity for routine education on prevention of viral infection in children.
