Biography
Dr. Hemmer received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1988 and his Master in Public Health from the Uniformed Services University in 2002. He served on active duty with the United States Air Force from 1991 to 2012, retiring with the rank of Colonel. During his military career, he received the Joint Service Commendation Medal, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, and the Defense Superior Service Medal. In addition, he served as the Chief of General Internal Medicine at Wright Patterson Medical Center, the USUHS internal medicine clerkship director, President of the USUHS Faculty Senate, and was the first active duty officer to receive the Carol Johns Medal, the highest award USUHS faculty can bestow on a fellow faculty member. He is Professor of Medicine and the Vice-Chairman for Educational Programs, Department of Medicine, USUHS since 2008. He has been involved with US national leadership in undergraduate medical education, including serving as President of the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM)—the national organization representing those who teach internal medicine to medical students—and as a member of Group on Educational Affairs of the Association of American Medical Colleges. He has served on the Research in Medical Education (RIME) Steering Committee and chaired the RIME nominating committee. He served on the steering committee for USUHS curriculum form, chairing the assessment subcommittee. Subsequently, he chaired the Assessment subcommittee of the Executive Curriculum Committee at USU and is currently Chair of the Executive Curriculum Committee. Each year, he coordinates and co-leads a week-long 40 hour CME course for residency program directors on the Assessment of Clinical Competence. He is a member of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine. In 2019 he was elected as a Master in the American College of Physicians and in 2020 received The Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Award. He has more than 95 peer reviewed publications, book chapters, and invited articles.
