Associate Professor and Professor of Anesthesiology

Promotion in academic rank is an honor and recognition of your accomplishments and contributions. As an ANE faculty member, we will ask you to continue to support medical students, residents, and faculty in their pursuit of academic anesthesiology through research and academic mentorship.  We believe your mentorship and support will provide opportunity for others in our large national faculty to be as successful as you have been in your career.

Promotion Eligibility

Promotion from one rank to another is not granted based solely on time in each rank, rather, by your clinical, educational, professional, and scholarly accomplishments and contributions. The progression in these levels is fully detailed in USU Instruction 1100A

Please review this guide on how to flourish in your current rank and prepare to advance to the next level.

Promotion Documents

All ANE faculty seeking promotion in faculty rank need to supply a detailed CV using the AAMC template (which should be modified to best represent their activities and accomplishments). Faculty who are seeking prefixed promotions (Adjunct, Visiting, Clinical, Emeritus, and/or Secondary) only need to supply their CV for review. Faculty seeking unprefixed promotions also need to supply a Statement of Scholarly Work, Educator's Portfolio, and PDFs of their publications. Details about and resources for developing these documents can be found below:

  • A detailed CV, listing all of your scholarly accomplishments and activities, is required for faculty for all academic promotions.
  • Your CV must follow the AAMC template, and should be written for reviewers who are both civilian and active duty, clinician and non-clinician, and are outside of the anesthesia specialty. This CV will be a little different than a standard CV in that it will be longer and will include entry explanations as appropriate. Here is an editable CV template created by our ANE faculty development team, as well as an annotated version of the editable CV template with guiding questions to assist your academic CV development.
  • Make sure to include all that you do- if it's not on your CV, it didn't happen. If you're struggling to describe your positions, please refer to these position bullet examples
  • The Educator's Portfolio is required for all faculty pursuing unprefixed promotions. Its purpose is to provide detailed information about your contributions as an educator, through a scholarly lens. It expands on you CV information, showcasing evidence and artifacts from your teaching activities and accomplishments.
  • To prepare for creating your portfolio, be sure to do continually do the following:
    • Track your work as a faculty member. Here is a sample method for tracking your work.
    • Maintain samples of your work (assessments, curriculum documents, course materials, etc.)
    • Gather feedback
      • Student/mentee evaluations
      • Peer evaluations
      • Mentor/advisor/senior faculty evaluations
      • Audience/participant feedback
  • We have developed this Guidance on Writing an Educator's Porfolio to help you create your portfolio, and also provide this editable cover page template for those who would like to use it.
  • Length: 30 pages max, including the cover page
  • The Scholarly Statement is required for all faculty pursuing unprefixed promotions. Its purpose is to explain how you approach and incorporate scholarship into your professional role.
  • Review this guidance to prepare your statement.
  • Length: 1-2 pages single spaced
  • All faculty pursuing unprefixed promotions will need to supply 4-5 manuscripts in PDF form as part of their promotion packet.
  • The manuscripts should be published (not unpublished or submitted), and ideally, manuscripts on which you are first or senior author.
