EDUCATIONAL ACTIVITIES
Educational Activities
 Teach a range of undergraduate level medical-surgical students courses; serve as an advisor for undergraduate medical students; and be available to teach both day and evening courses. Teach in the simulation lab and work with students in simulation demonstration and remediation. Participate in USU/public service and scholarship. Member of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU) Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Teach an intermediate level proficiency based knot-tying and suturing curriculum for surgery residents. Document educational benefit and quantify cost-effectiveness of implementation within the surgery residency program.

 Operated within the Department of Surgery at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD, where I developed models for hemorrhagic shock and applied a novel life-preserving strategy (Suspended Animation) by induced hypothermia; Worked on strategies for administering intravenous perfluorocarbons for preventing acute respiratory distress syndrome and preservation of systemic oxygenation with and without hemorrhagic shock; Assisted in training surgical residents in advanced microsurgical courses including Micro-vascular Surgery and Ocular Trauma; Instrumental in facilitating multiple instructional activities including the Surgery Interest Group, which is directed to medical students and teaching suturing skills, to high school students and nursing students; Continue to serve on the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

 Diagnosed and treated naturally occurring and experimental induced diseases of laboratory animals; Consulted with investigators regarding appropriate animal models, anesthesia, analgesia and euthanasia; Provided oversight of environmental enrichment and large animal preventative medicine programs (quarantine, conditioning, TB, vaccination); Provided didactic and hands on instruction for husbandry staff, veterinary technicians and research staff members; Pre reviewed animal care and use protocols prior to submission to the GUACUC; Performed pre anesthesia, anesthesia and anesthesia monitoring of large and small animal species; Developed surgical animal models in consult with principle investigators; Performed euthanasia, routine gross necropsy and sample collections; provide holiday, weekend and night emergency on call duty.

 Performed surgical procedures and provided clinical post operative and emergency care for over 250 non human primates; Provided clinical care for rodents in neuroscience and behavioral research. Supervised the use of radiographic technique and equipment; Maintained a log of controlled substances. Served as instructor for non human primate safety courses; Performed on call rotations for weekend, holiday, and emergency after hours veterinary coverage; Served as "Key Personnel for NIMH"; Performed amputations, vasectomies, bone marrow aspirations, craniotomies, gross necropsies, and assisted with placement of eye coil; Taught post doctoral and veterinary technicians surgical techniques.

 Designed and incorporated a comprehensive fitness guide and planned physical activity programs at Sidwell Friends; Taught fitness concepts using physical activities as an educational and motivational tool; Achieved goals and objectives for the volleyball and track & field program. Organized game schedules with other schools and coaches; Taught important lessons for student athletes by giving them useful practical guidance for creating a positive athletic experience; Provided information about the anatomical, physiological, and psychological transformations student athletes experience during the stages of growth and development. Advised the Athletic Director on the status of the Girls Volleyball and Track and Field team.

 Directed all aspects of professional and technical surgical support for the Division of Veterinary Medicine; Responsible for pre surgical planning for all members of the team surgeon, anesthetist, veterinary surgical technicians, animal care staff and investigators; Served as a member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee; Ensured that all personnel were properly trained and qualified for the roles they performed; Served as principle instructor for the DOD Aseptic and Sterile Surgery Techniques Workshop; Served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland.

 Directed the Navy's largest animal biomedical Research program; Supervised a staff of 18 with a budget of over $670,000; Maintained a comprehensive animal care and use program while ensuring compliance with federal laws, animal welfare guidelines and Department of Defense (DOD) regulations; Responsible for the humane care and use of over 6,000 animals covering six species; Provided professional and technical expertise and support for animal model selection, including surgical manipulation and anesthesia; Served as veterinary consultant to the Naval Medical Research Operations in Lima, Peru and Portsmouth Virginia; Provided professional insight and management solutions that directly resulted in the successful American Association for the Accreditation of Laboratory Animal Care certification for an international Navy animal care facility.

 Developed a technique to exteriorize the guinea pig trachea
 Developed a technique to isolate and inject the bile duct of rats
