Dr. Smerin's career interest is in the neurophysiology underlying the intersection of cognition and emotion. His dissertation with Karl Pribram is early work tying the striatum with visual attention. Under William de Groat he researched the effect of traumatic injury on neural reorganization. At NIH he moved to modulation of brain rhythmicity by potassium leak channels. The devastation caused by of anger in PTSD and TBI has led to his "Neurophysiology of Anger" project currently in the USU Department of Psychiatry.
