BiographyDr. Chuck Callahan is the Vice President of Population Health at the University of Maryland Medical Center. He is a retired Army colonel and physician executive with more than thirty years of experience who has served in a range of hospital leadership positions from PICU service chief to hospital chief medical officer, chief operating officer and chief executive officer. After retirement he worked as a Professor of Pediatrics at the F. Edward Hébert School of Medicine of the Uniformed Services University, Bethesda Maryland. He holds a primary appointment in the Department of Pediatrics and a secondary appointment as Professor of Military and Emergency Medicine. In 2014 he volunteered to care for patients in an Ebola Treatment Unit in Sierra Leone during the height of the epidemic in West Africa. In the fall of 2015 he transitioned to his position at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore, supporting the medical center’s efforts to improve the health and well-being of the people of West Baltimore.
Dr. Callahan is board certified in pediatrics and pediatric pulmonology. He has received numerous teaching awards and has lectured broadly on leadership and “the culture of excellence” in medicine. He is the author of more than one hundred abstracts, articles, books and book chapters on leadership and medicine, and has been awarded more than two million dollars in research grants in asthma, telemedicine and population health.
