Biography

CDR Jakubek was born in Pittsburgh, PA, but as the son of a Navy submarine officer, grew up in several areas of the country before he graduated from Saint Vincent College, Latrobe, PA in 2004 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. After his commissioning as an ensign in 2004, he attended the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine through the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship Program and earned a Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree and was promoted to lieutenant in 2008. He completed an Internal Medicine internship at Naval Medical Center San Diego in 2009, during which he was selected for undersea/diving medical officer training at the Naval Undersea Medical Institute, Groton, CT.

Upon completion of training he was assigned to his first operational billet as Battalion Surgeon with 3rd Reconnaissance Battalion in Okinawa, Japan and was forward deployed with the Battalion to Sangin District, Helmand Province, Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in summer 2011. He was the sole physician far outside the wire for months at a time during the heavy summer fighting season and directed over 20 medical evacuations.

He then went on to neurology residency training at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, MD from 2012 - 2015 and is currently board certified in Neurology from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He reported as Head of Neurology, Naval Hospital Jacksonville, FL from September 2015 to May 2018, providing neurologic care to over 18,000 beneficiaries in the region.

CDR Jakubek then returned to an operational medicine role as the Group Medical Officer at Commander Submarine Group TEN from June 2018 - June 2021 where he was the senior Undersea Medical Officer overseeing the provision of care to over 2500 submariners. He qualified as a Submarine Medical Officer and maintained his Navy diving medical officer qualifications in support of Trident Refit Facility Kings Bay. In his last 15 months in this role during the COVID pandemic his efforts ensured the undisrupted presence of strategic forces by forming new policies and procedures. In 2021 he began fellowship training in Clinical Neurophysiology at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center with an anticipated graduation date of June 2022.

CDR Jakubek’s personal decorations include a Meritorious Service Medal, a Joint Services Commendation Medal, and Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal and is designated as a Submarine, Undersea/Diving Medical Officer, and Fleet Marine Force Qualified Officer. He is also appointed as an associate professor of Neurology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.
