Biography

As a Board-Certified Specialist in Pediatric Nutrition, I serve as a Pediatric, Metabolic, and Ketogenic Dietitian at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC). Alongside my clinical practice, I hold an academic appointment as an Instructor of Pediatrics for the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium (SAUSHEC) and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). Since joining BAMC in 2012, I have dedicated my career to the intricate nutritional needs of infants, children, and adolescents, providing complex medical nutrition therapy across high-acuity subspecialties including genetics, metabolism, and child neurology.

Throughout my tenure, I have focused on spearheading pioneering healthcare initiatives within the Defense Health Agency (DHA). I established our military treatment facility's first pediatric ketogenic diet therapy program for intractable epilepsy and co-developed an integrated Pediatric Gastroenterology-Nutrition clinic to streamline and enhance patient care. Additionally, I serve as the metabolic dietitian for the DHA’s only Metabolic Clinic, where I manage highly individualized therapies for patients with rare genetic disorders. Driven by clinical inquiry, my quality improvement efforts recently led to the novel discovery of secondary carnitine deficiency in pediatric patients fed commercial plant-based blended formulas, prompting the implementation of vital new institutional surveillance protocols.

Beyond my clinical duties, I am deeply committed to shaping the next generation of healthcare professionals. I developed the first dedicated pediatric nutrition elective rotation for USUHS residents and have had the privilege of precepting and mentoring over 100 dietetic interns and more than 150 medical students. As an educator and speaker, I regularly present on advanced pediatric medical nutrition therapy, malnutrition, and humanitarian assistance at national and regional symposiums. I earned my Bachelor of Science in Nutritional Science from Texas A&M University and completed my dietetic internship with the Texas Department of State Health Services.
