Biography
Dr. Hamaoka received his B.S. from California Polytechnic University, San Luis Obispo, and his M.D. from the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine in 1999. After his Internship and Residency in Psychiatry at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, he was assigned to the Uniformed Services University in the Department of Psychiatry. At this assignment, he served in several capacities including Clerkship Director and then Assistant Chair of Medical Education. During this time, he deployed to Camp Adder (Tallil), Iraq, as part of a Joint Expeditionary Tasking (JET) with the Army and served as the Officer in Charge of the 732nd ESPTS, Combat Operational Stress Control. In 2012, Dr. Hamaoka was selected as the Associate Program Director for the Psychiatry residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, supervising future military and civilian psychiatrists at one of the nation’s largest programs. Upon selection to Colonel in 2017, Dr. Hamaoka returned to the Uniformed Services University School of Medicine and served as Associate Professor and the Department’s Assistant Chair for Medical Education. Additionally, he served as the Air Force Senior Service Advisor for the school's 70+ Air Force enlisted and officer personnel.Dr. Hamaoka’s awards include the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Defense Meritorious Service, Meritorious Service Medal (1OLC), the LTG P.K. Carlton Award for the Outstanding Faculty at the San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium, and the U.S. Air Force Medical Special Experience Identifier (SEI) Grandmaster designation. He has authored or co/authored over 25 peer-reviewed publications and chapters and published several internationally utilized psychiatry undergraduate medical education modules for the Association of Directors of Medical Student Education in Psychiatry (ADMSEP). Dr. Hamaoka served as Chair for the Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress’ Amygdala, Stress, and PTSD Conference, which consistently features internationally and nationally renowned clinicians/scientists and is attended by over 400 participants annually. As a recognized subject matter expert, he served as the Mental Health Course Director for the Defense Institute for Medical Operations (DIMO) for over ten years. He led missions to Colombia, Poland, Slovakia, and Tunisia and supported those to Lebanon, Chad, Nigeria, Mexico, Mauritius, Iraq, and Sierra Leone. Dr. Hamaoka retired from the United States Air Force after 22 years of service and currently serves as the Uniformed Services University’s Psychiatry Senior Site Director at Brooke Army Medical Center, Joint Base San Antonio, TX.
