Biography

I served until 2021 as Chief of the Clinical Epilepsy Section NINDS and Professor of Neurology at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. I continue to perform research as an intramural Senior Investigator. As Section Chief, I received continuous funding from the NINDS Division of Intramural research since 1988. In addition to performing clinical and translational research, I have provided care to patients with epilepsy, at the NIH Clinical Center, National Naval Medical Center, and Walter Reade Army Medical Center, and performed clinical research in epilepsy since 1979. I have extensive experience in clinical and translational research in patients with drug-resistant epilepsy, including a series of experimental drug trials, fMRI for language and memory mapping, and neurotransmitter receptor imaging. More recently I have worked on PET imaging of inflammation, and viral etiologies of epilepsy. I am Board-Certified in Internal Medicine, Neurology, Clinical Neurophysiology and Epilepsy. I have trained more than 50 fellows, many of whom have pursued careers as clinical and translational epilepsy investigators. I have been very active in national and international organizations, including the American Epilepsy Society, International League Against Epilepsy, and American Academy of Neurology. I have served as a consultant for the Pan American Health Organization, and the World Health Organization in South East Asia, and as a collaborator on cysticercosis research in Peru. Supported by the World Federation of Neurology and the International League Against Epilepsy I have made four trips to serve as Visiting Professor at the University of Zambia in Lusaka where I performed direct patient care as well as teaching and research.
