Biography
Cellular stress contributes to the pathogenesis of numerous etiologically diverse diseases. Cells respond to stress by activating signaling pathways that function to neutralize the stressor or promote adaptation. However, persistent or hyper- activation of these pathways can also lead to cellular dysfunction and apoptosis. As either an insufficient or an overactive stress response can cause widespread cell death and tissue damage, both pharmacologic activators and inhibitors of these pathways have been proposed as therapeutic interventions using a one-drug, many-disease paradigm. At USU, my laboratory will work to define stress pathway signaling dynamics in military-relevant disorders, determine the metabolic factors that govern these stress responses, and identify novel approaches for resolving toxic stress and/or stress signaling involved in both acute and chronic conditions.Representative Bibliography
