Biography

Lt Col Neubauer grew up in the Buffalo, NY area. Early interest in the outdoors eventually led to his achieving the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America. He was also introduced to the "beautiful game" and remains an avid soccer player and youth coach to this day. Dr. Neubauer credits his mother (who worked as a hospital microbiologist) and experiences as a paramedic for developing his interest in medicine. After completing his undergraduate education at Canisius College in Buffalo, Lt Col Neubauer worked for several years as a professional ground and flight paramedic. In this latter role, he met Air Force Reserve Colonel Dr. Michael Torres who served as an early mentor. This led to his choice to pursue his medical education through the HPSP. At the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Medicine, Dr. Neubauer served as Student Government President and is proud to have earned the Buffalo Surgical Society Prize (awarded to the top student in the 3rd and 4th year of medical school). After medical school, Dr. Neubauer completed his residency at SAUSHEC. He thereafter joined the teaching faculty in San Antonio. After serving in Iraq, he was selected as associate program director for the internal medicine residency program in San Antonio. Under the guidance of key mentors such as Col William Hannah, Col Rechell Rodriguez, and Dr. Temple Ratcliffe, Dr. Neubauer uncovered his interest in medical education. In 2012, he transferred to the Uniformed Services University where he has served as module director for the cardiovascular-pulmonary-renal module. Dr. Neubauer completed a Masters degree in Health Professional Education at USU in 2019. In July of 2017, he was selected to serve as the service chief for the general internal medicine division at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Currently serving in this role, Lt Col Neubauer is responsible for the PCMH (30,000 enrollees), inpatient medicine service (4 teaching services), Integrative Health and Wellness Division, Warrior Clinic, and Geriatric and Palliative Medicine Service.
