Biography

Dr. Clifton Yu currently serves as the Deputy Director for Education, Training, and Research at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and Professor of Pediatrics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. He retired as a Colonel in the US Army Medical Corps after more than 30 years of active duty service during which he held numerous leadership positions to include Chief of Graduate Medical and Dental Education at Walter Reed, Program Director of the National Capitol Consortium Pediatric Residency, Chief of Outpatient Pediatrics at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Chief of Newborn Services at DeWitt Army Community Hospital, Chief of Pediatrics at the 67th Combat Support Hospital in Wurzburg, Germany, and Chief of Pediatrics at the 14th Combat Support Hospital in Bagram, Afghanistan. He is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and an AOA graduate of the Tufts University School of Medicine; completed his residency in pediatrics at Tripler Army Medical Center; and received a clinical teaching certificate from the Stanford Faculty Development Center in 2002. Dr. Yu’s academic interests have included both undergraduate and graduate medical education, with earlier development of curricular materials in international health that have since been adopted by the American Academy of Pediatrics as a global training aid and published in 5 languages. More recent work has focused on clinical teaching, faculty and leadership development, and team communication particularly as they relate to hospital transitions of care that have resulted in publications in forums such as The New England Journal of Medicine and the British Medical Journal . Academically he has published over 50 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and abstracts, spoken at more than 80 national meetings and workshops, and been a visiting professor at multiple academic institutions throughout the country. Dr. Yu has held numerous leadership positions in education, to include chair of faculty development for the Association of Pediatric Program Directors (APPD), Executive Board Member of the American Academy of Pediatrics Uniformed Services Section, and Pediatric GME Representative to the Board of Directors of the Primary Care Organizations Consortium. He has been recognized both locally and nationally with teaching and leadership awards for his ongoing work in GME, to include the 2011 Robert A. Holm Award from the APPD given for distinguished national leadership in medical education; election into the American Pediatric Society in 2014 for important contributions as a child health leader, teacher, and scholar; joint recipient of the 2016 John M. Eisenberg Award for Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality for his work with the I-PASS Study Group in improving hospital transitions of care on a national level; and winner of the 2021 Department of Defense Leadership Commitment Award for Advancement Toward High Reliability Healthcare.
