Biography

COL Nguyen is currently a Professor at USU with faculty appointments in the Department of Family Medicine and the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine.

Dana earned her MD at the Uniformed Services University in 2002 and then transitioned to Ft. Bragg, North Carolina to complete her Family Medicine residency training, serving as a Chief Resident during her third year. She moved to Ft. Leonard Wood, Missouri to practice full-scope Family Medicine for the first several years after residency training. Dana also served as the Chief of the Department of Family Medicine and deployed to OEF with the 10th Mountain Division while assigned to GLWACH. Following her love of teaching and mentoring, Dana returned to Ft. Bragg to serve for five years as the Associate Program Director in the Army’s largest Family Medicine residency program. She also completed a Faculty Development Fellowship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Dana returned to USU as a faculty member in 2014 where she was selected to serve as the Family Medicine Clerkship Director. In this role, she has received numerous teaching awards and honors, including the 2017 Clements Award, given to USU’s outstanding military educator; the AOA Teacher of the Year Award; and numerous Dean’s Impact Awards. She has served as a faculty leader on the University’s Executive Curriculum Committee, USU's Clinical Entrustment Committee, the Gold Humanism Honor Society local chapter, and the SPEAR (Students as Peer Educators and Advocates for Reform) group. Dana was selected as the Chair of the Department of Family Medicine in 2020. She is dually appointed in the Department of Military and Emergency Medicine.

Dana has also been recognized as a national leader in military and clinical medicine. She recently sat on the Board of Directors for the Association of Departments of Family Medicine. Also notably, she served as the Army representative on the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program’s Peer Reviewed Medical Research Program, overseeing annual distribution of $380 million in research funds. She additionally served as the senior Army leader on the MHS Council for Female Physician Recruitment and Retention, providing mentorship, training, and recognition for military female physicians. Dana has numerous publications in the areas of medical education, leadership, and military women for which she has multiple extramural collaborations. She is a member of the Military Order of Medical Merit, has been awarded the Army’s “A” Designator, and was recognized as a WRNMMC Master Clinician.
