Education

Lt Col Elizabeth V. Schulz graduated high school with academic honors in 2003 and received her Bachelor’s in Science, Cum Laude, in Microbiology with a minor in Spanish in 2006 from the University of Georgia. She attended medical school at the Medical College of Georgia from 2007-2011, where she served as Class President (2007-2011). Dr. Schulz received both her internship and residency training in Pediatrics at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (Portsmouth, VA; 2011-2014). She was selected for civilian sponsored fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine and pursued this subspecialty training at the Medical University of South Carolina (Charleston, SC; 2014-2017). She completed Air Command & Staff College in 2020. Most recently, Dr. Schulz received her Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) from the Uniformed Services University in 2024.

Biography

Dr. Schulz is an avid proponent of medical research and evidence-based medicine. Her academic interests include improving prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal nutrition to support maternal and neonatal outcomes, decreasing antiangiogenic factors that contribute to vascular pregnancy complications, examining the role of technology in large clinical trials, and exploring leadership dynamics within military medicine.

Following fellowship training, Lt Col Schulz transitioned to Kadena Air Base and Naval Hospital Okinawa (Jul 2017–Jul 2020) as an Air Force neonatologist stationed in INDOPACOM, where she served as Outreach Director and WESTPAC Neonatal Transport Director. During her time in Okinawa, her initiatives earned recognition at international medical conferences and, in 2019, she was named the American Academy of Pediatrics’ Pediatrician of the Year (Uniformed Services–West). From 2020–2024, she served as a neonatologist at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and later as the Program Director for the Department of Defense’s sole tri-service Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine fellowship training program (National Capital Consortium). During this time, she also supported neonatal transport and contingency medical efforts tied to Operation Allies Refuge and Operation Allies Welcome (OAR/OAW) and the NeoSTAT team in Guam. She completed her Master of Health Professions Education (MHPE) through the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2024. Dr. Schulz currently serves as a flight surgeon with the 165th Medical Group in the Georgia Air National Guard and teaches undergraduate and graduate learners through USUHS and its hospital affiliations across multiple Graduate Medical Education programs in the National Capital Consortium.
