Biography

LCDR Jacob Cole is a native of Scranton, Pennsylvania. He graduated with merit from the US Naval Academy with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. During his time at the Naval Academy he participated in the humanitarian medical mission Continuing Promise 2011 aboard USNS Comfort (T-AH-20).

He was commissioned in 2012 into the US Navy Medical Corps and subsequently attended the Uniformed Services University. Upon graduation as a Doctor of Medicine, LCDR Cole completed both internship training in internal medicine and residency training in anesthesiology at Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP). Following his internship training he was selected as the NMCP Intern of the Year. In his final year of residency, he was selected as Chief Anesthesiology Resident. Concurrent with his residency training, LCDR Cole completed both an executive Master of Business Administration degree from Brenau University and a fellowship in Academic Clinical Education from Eastern Virginia Medical School.

Following graduation from residency, LCDR Cole served as an attending anesthesiologist and Associate Program Director of the anesthesiology residency at NMCP where he was selected as the Anesthesiology Residency Teacher of the Year. He then completed a Fellowship of Surgical Critical Care Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA before deploying as the Director of Surgical Services at the Role 2 Expeditionary Medicine Facility aboard Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti, Africa. In this role, he was responsible for ensuring the availability of emergency damage control surgical capability to allied forces performing counter-terrorism and counter-piracy operations in the Horn of Africa area of operations.

He has been awarded the rank of Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at the Uniformed Services University. His research interests include the use of simulation and technology in education, as well as trauma resuscitation and advanced noninvasive hemodynamic monitoring. He has published multiple scientific manuscripts on the topics of translational animal model optimization and novel airway management devices.

LCDR Cole has achieved board certification in both anesthesiology and critical care medicine from the American Board of Anesthesiology. His personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (three awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, as well as various unit and service awards.
