Biography

CDR Jason R. Bernhard was born in Pottstown, PA and attended Boyertown Area High School. He graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD in 2002 with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry, accepting a commission into the Medical Corps. After earning his Doctorate of Medicine (MD) from the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS) in May 2006, he completed a one year internship in General Surgery. CDR Bernhard then completed Flight Surgeon training from the Naval Aerospace Medicine Institute (NAMI) at NAS Pensacola in 2008, and was assigned as the Flight Surgeon for Marine All Weather Fighter Attack Squadron 224 (VMFA(AW)-224) in Beaufort, SC. During this tour, CDR Bernhard completed two Unit Deployment Program deployments to Marine Corps Air Station Iwakuni, Japan with the Bengals.

CDR Bernhard returned to USUHS in 2011 subsequently completing a two-year General Preventive Medicine/Public Health residency program, along with earning a Master’s Degree in Public Health (MPH). His initial assignment following residency was as the Director for Public Health at Naval Hospital Beaufort, SC, focusing mainly on recruit health at Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island. He then served as the Force Preventive Medicine Officer for III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan, where he also served as the 3d Marine Expeditionary Brigade Surgeon filling critical tasking from USINDOPACOM as the region’s Alert Contingency MAGTF. CDR Bernhard returned to NAMI in 2017 after accepting selection for advanced training in Aerospace Medicine. Upon completion of the residency program in 2019, he was assigned as the Senior Medical Officer onboard the USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER (CVN69), successfully completing two record-breaking deployments as part of Carrier Strike Groups TEN and TWO. His follow-on orders took him to Navy Environmental Preventive Medicine Unit TWO, where he served as Assistant Officer-in-Charge, Team Lead for Forward Deployable Preventive Medicine Unit - Team 3, and Public Health Emergency Officer for Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.

CDR Bernhard is currently serving as Associate Program Director for the General Preventive Medicine Residency, and Assistant Professor within the Department of Preventive Medicine and Biostatistics at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. CDR Bernhard holds board certifications in General Preventive Medicine/Public Health, Occupational Medicine, and Aerospace Medicine.

CDR Bernhard is married to Alexis Bernhard and calls Boyertown, PA home. They have one child, Jackson, age 11. His personal decorations include Meritorious Service Medal (3), Navy Marine Corps Commendation Medal, Joint Service Achievement Medal, and the Navy Marine Corps Achievement Medal (2).
