Biography

Dr. Jerri Curtis graduated from the University of Florida in 1980 with a B.S. in microbiology. She accepted an HPSP scholarship and graduated from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in 1984. She began her pediatric residency at Portsmouth Naval Hospital and her first duty assignment after residency was at Naval Hospital, Rota, Spain as a General Pediatrician. She received her fellowship training in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine from 1989–1992 at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USUHS). She was then assigned to the National Naval Medical Center (NNMC) as a staff neonatologist. In 1994 she deployed on the USNS Comfort to Haiti in support of “Operation Uphold Democracy” providing medical and humanitarian support to the Haitian people in a time when their government was in danger of being overthrown. As a staff neonatologist, Dr. Curtis continued her research that began during her fellowship. Ten years of rigorous research culminated in her winning the Navy Wide Research Competition and the prestigious Ogden Bruton Award for research excellence. From 1997–2005 Dr. Curtis was the program director for the Tri-Service Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine Fellowship at USUHS. In addition, Dr. Curtis has served on several committees to include the Institutional Review Board where she ultimately became the Chair for three years. In 2003, she was selected as the Director for Graduate Medical Education at NNMC. In 2005, she was named the Specialty Advisor to the Navy Surgeon General for Neonatology. Dr. Curtis was the Director of Navy Graduate Medical Education and was assigned to Navy Medicine Manpower, Personnel, Training and Education Command in Bethesda, Maryland from 2006–2008. Dr. Curtis was appointed as the Executive Director and Designated Institutional Official of the National Capital Consortium in Bethesda, Maryland in 2008. She was appointed as the Associate Dean for GME at USUHS in 2010. She just recently retired from the U.S. Navy after a thirty year career. Dr. Curtis is board certified in Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. She has a medical license in the state of Maryland. She holds a faculty appointment as Associate Professor, USUHS and a medical staff appointment at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. She is a member of the Pediatric Academic Society, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society, and a fellow in the American Academy of Pediatrics. She received an appointment by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education to serve on the Residency Review Committee for Pediatrics.
