Biography
Dr. Nicholas A. Chartrain is an Assistant Professor of Radiology & Bioengineering at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences (USU). He is also a Research Scientist at the USU Center for Biotechnology (4D Bio3). At 4D Bio3, Dr. Chartrain develops organ-on-chip models to study exposures relevant to military settings and uses some of the world’s most advanced 3D bioprinters to create engineered tissue using cells, biomaterials, and growth factors.Prior to joining the 4D Bio3 team, Dr. Chartrain received his doctorate from Virginia Tech where his research focused on novel materials, machines, and chemistries for the 3D printing of tissue engineering scaffolds (Profs. Christopher B. Williams & Abby Whittington). His research experience in materials development for additive manufacturing dates back to 2009 during his undergraduate studies at Cornell University (Prof. Hod Lipson). Dr. Chartrain also spent time at Formlabs, where he developed material print settings that have been used by customers to 3D print millions of parts for prototyping and end-use applications.
