Biography
Dr. Paul A. Hemmer received his medical degree from the Medical College of Wisconsin in 1988 and his Master in Public Health from the Uniformed Services University in 2002. He served on active duty with the United States Air Force from 1991 to 2012, retiring with the rank of Colonel and received the Defense Superior Service Medal. He has served as the Uniformed Services University internal medicine clerkship director, President of the USU Faculty Senate, and was the first active duty officer to receive the Carol Johns Medal, the highest award USUHS faculty can bestow on a fellow faculty member. In 2018, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Alumni Association. He was awarded Mastership in the American College of Physicians in 2019. He received one of the 2020 Alpha Omega Alpha (AΩA) Robert J. Glaser Distinguished Teacher Awards from the Association of American Medical Colleges. He is Professor of Medicine and the Vice-Chair for Educational Programs, Department of Medicine, USUHS since 2008. He has been involved with US national leadership in undergraduate medical education, including serving as President of the Clerkship Directors in Internal Medicine (CDIM)—the national organization representing those who teach internal medicine to medical students—and as a member of Group on Educational Affairs of the Association of American Medical Colleges, service on the Research in Medical Education (RIME) Steering Committee and he chaired the RIME nominating committee. He is the Chair of the Executive Curriculum Committee for the USU School of Medicine. Each year, he co-leads a week-long 40 hour CME course for residency program directors on the Assessment of Clinical Competence. He is a member of the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine. He has more than 100 peer reviewed publications, book chapters, and invited articles.
