Biography

Lieutenant Commander Berkheimer is a native of California. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Brigham Young University and a Doctor of Medicine from Saint Louis University School of Medicine. He was commissioned through the Health Professions Scholarship Program in May 2019.

He began his medical training by completing a year of Internal Medicine Internship at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he was awarded Intern of the Month from the Internal Medicine Residency Program.

He was then selected for an operational assignment to Camp Lejeune, where he was a Battalion Surgeon for II Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group. In this role he provided primary medical care in support of 4500 personnel, was the lead Medical Officer for Large Scale Exercise 21, coordinated testing and medical management of COVID-19 during the global pandemic, earned the Fleet Marine Force warfare device, and earned a Navy Commendation medal.

After his operational tour he completed the Pediatrics Residency Program at Naval Medical Center San Diego and became a board certified Pediatrician in Oct 2025. During his pediatrics residency he was awarded Intern of the Year and the Charles B Davis Resident Teaching Award by the Pediatrics Residency Program. He was also awarded the Uniformed Services University Department of Pediatrics Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding commitment to medical student education.

His first tour as a board-certified Pediatrician was at Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, where he also served as the Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Program Director and the Pediatric Rotation Director for the Family Medicine Residency Program there.

He then assumed his current duty as staff Pediatrician at Naval Hospital Twentynine Palms, supporting a critically manned billet to sustain medical support of military dependents living in the Twentynine Palms area.

Staff Pediatrician, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton, Camp Pendleton, CA (2025-present) . Supervised clinical work of family medicine residents and USUHS medical students rotating in pediatric environments. Oversaw training of rotating resident physicians, including daily didactic teaching.

Training Officer of II Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, Camp Lejeune, NC (2021-2022). Responsible for planning and oversight of military and medical trainings for 35 Navy corpsman and medical providers. Developed and implemented an annual training plan

Battalion Surgeon of II Marine Expeditionary Force Information Group, Camp Lejeune, NC (2020-2022).

Survey of Wellness in Young Children (SWYC) Process Improvement Project, Naval Medical Center San Diego, San Diego, CA (2023-2025). Implemented use of the SWYC for all well child visits across the General Pediatric Training Clinic. Facilitated collection of chart reviews monitoring appropriate utilization of the survey during recommended visits. Poster presentation at 2024 Continuous Process Improvement Fair at Naval Medicine Readiness and Training Command San Diego.

Pediatric Rotation Director for Family Medicine Residency Program, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton (2026-present). Coordinated rotation logistics, orient new residents, and provide performance evaluations for family medicine residents in both inpatient and outpatient pediatric rotations.

Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Program Director, Naval Hospital Camp Pendleton (2025-present). Oversaw PALS program functions, including the training of new instructors, managing class availability, equipment management, and maintaining teaching standards. Facilitated transition of PALS program to comply with American Red Cross r.25 course requirements.

Charles B. Davis Resident Teaching Award, Naval Medical Center San Diego, San Diego, CA (2025). For promoting teaching as an important aspect of training and sustaining the residency as future faculty.
