Biography

COL Sean J. Hipp received his B.S. in Biology from Georgetown University in 1996, M.D. from Temple University School of Medicine in 2002, Pediatric Residency from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill in 2005 and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Fellowship from Walter Reed Army Medical Center in 2011. COL Hipp additionally completed a Master’s in Biomedical Science from Drexel University in 2012. He is currently enrolled in U.S. Army War College Distance Education Program class of 2024.

Prior to arrival at First Army, COL Hipp was the Chief Medical Officer at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) from 2021-2023 supporting safe, quality health care delivery. From 2016-2020 COL Hipp stood up the first Virtual Medical Center for the Army transitioning it to the Defense Health Agency. This program supported the operational space with Advanced Virtual Support for Operational Forces (ADVISOR), the Mobile Medic Program and readiness with the Virtually Integrated Patient Readiness and Remote Care (VIPRR) Clinic. Upon moving to San Antonio in 2011 COL Hipp served as BAMC Pediatric Hematologist-Oncologist working in the clinics and wards. He became the Associate Program Director for the Pediatric Residency Program from 2015-2016. He also had the opportunity to work as the Battalion Surgeon in the BAMC Warrior Transition Battalion for 2 years. COL Hipp’s first duty location as a General Pediatrician was the U.S. Army MEDDAC, Heidelberg, Germany where he served as the Chief of Adolescent Medicine then transitioned to the Chief of Pediatrics. He was deployed to Afghanistan with the 1-91 Cav, 173rd ABCT from 2007 to 2008 taking care of Soldiers and local nationals in the Himalayas as the Squadron Surgeon.

COL Hipp’s key military awards include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (four Oak Leaf Clusters), the Army Medical Department Order of Military Medical Merit (O2M3) and the Surgeon General’s “A” Proficiency Designator. He was a part of the 2018 U.S. Army Health Information Technology Mercury Team Award for the Virtual Medical Center. COL Hipp is an Associate Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Bethesda, MD.
