Biography

Prior to his subspecialty training, Col Newton had a variety of military assignments including first as a staff pediatrician and then pediatric clinic chief at Ramstein Air Base, Germany followed by an assignment as the Pediatric Flight Commander at Malcolm Grow Medical Center, Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland. After completion of his subspecialty training, Col Newton served as the Chief of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology and Assistant Chief of Pediatrics at Keesler Medical Center, Keesler Air Force Base, Biloxi, Mississippi.
Col Newton returned to the faculty of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in 2010 as an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics. In 2012 he was selected to serve as the Service Chief for Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center. Col Newton currently serves as the Chief of the Department of Pediatrics at Walter Reed and the Pediatric Subject Matter Expert for the National Capital Region to the Defense Health Agency in Falls Church, VA. He remains on faculty at USUHS as a Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics.

Col Newton has served on the John P. Murtha Cancer Center Council at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center since 2012. He has a strong interest in cancer care for Adolescents and Young Adults and serves as the Medical Director for the Adolescent and Young Adult Cancer Program in the Murtha Cancer Center. His work has earned him both the Hope Award by the Ulman Cancer Foundation in 2017 and the Relentless for the Cure Award by the Leukemia Lymphoma Society in 2012. His research interests include Cancer Survivorship and Healthcare Transitions for children with chronic diseases. He served on the 2017 Congressional Metastatic Cancer Task Force and was recently selected to serve as a Programmatic Reviewer for the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs Peer Review Cancer Research Program.

Col Newton is certified by the American Board of Pediatrics in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Hematology/Oncology. He is a member of the American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, the Children’s Oncology Group and the American Academy of Pediatrics. For the American Academy of Pediatrics Col Newton has served as the President of the Uniformed Services East Chapter, on the Executive Council for the Section on Uniformed Services, and as District I Representative and Chair of the National Nominating Committee. He recently was elected as the District I Representative for the Chapter Forum Management Committee.

His military awards include the Air Force Achievement Medal (1998), the Army Achievement Medial (1999, 2008), the Air Force Meritorious Service Medal (2003, 2005 & 2010), the Field Grade Officer Clinical Excellence Award for the Air Mobility Command (2005), and the Joint Service Meritorious Service Medal (2016).

Col Newton’s dedication and long-term commitment to Military Pediatric Medicine was recognized by the Uniformed Services Section of the American Academy of Pediatrics in 2017 with by the Outstanding Service Award.
