Biography

Dr. Harrell attended Duke University on a NROTC scholarship receiving his commission into the Navy in 2002. He then attended medical school at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine on a HPSP scholarship graduating in 2006. He completed internship and residency in Internal Medicine at the Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) and was selected to be the Chief of Residents. In 2010, he transferred to the National Naval Medical Center which integrated in 2011 to become the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center (WRNMMC). He took on the role of Director of the Hypertension Clinic and quickly became the clinical expert in the management of complicated and resistant hypertension. He was selected and served as the DoD Champion for creation of the 2014 VA/DoD Clinical Practice Guideline for the Diagnosis and Management of Hypertension in the Primary Care Setting. While at WRNMMC, he served as a core faculty member in the Internal Medicine Residency Program receiving two teaching awards. In 2015, Dr. Harrell transferred to back to NMCSD to start fellowship in Cardiovascular Disease and is expected to graduate in 2018.

Dr. Harrell's clinical and research interests include the management of hypertension, heart failure, coronary artery disease, and quality improvement.
