Biography
Lieutenant Commander William Cronin is a native of Dwight, Illinois. He was commissioned in 2009 in to the United States Navy Medical Corps.His educational background includes a Bachelor of Science Degree in Chemistry in 2004 from the United States Naval Academy, a Doctor of Medicine degree in 2009 from Dartmouth Medical School and a Masters in Business Administration in 2009 from Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth. Transitional year internship training was completed at Naval Medical Center San Diego in 2010. Undersea Medical Officer training was completed at Naval Undersea Medical Institute in 2011.
His first assignment was as Deputy Department Head, Undersea Medicine Department at Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring, MD conducting research to enhance warfighter performance in extreme environments as well as developing non-recompression therapies to treat decompression sickness for disabled submarine escape and rescue.
At the completion of his Undersea Medical Officer tour, he entered anesthesia residency training in 2014 at National Capital Consortium residency program. He graduated from the program in 2017 serving as Chief Resdient his last year. After residency he completed a one year Research Fellowship Grant awarded by the Foundation of Anesthesia Education and Research. At the completion of his research fellowship he served as Assistant Officer in Charge of Expeditionary Resusitative Surgical System 21, a role 2 light manuever team for Naval Amphibious Task Force 51 / 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade operating in CENTCOM and AFRICOM. His current assignment is to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center where he serves as a Associate Program Director of the anesthesia residency program and staff anesthesiologist.
Lieutenant Commander Cronin is authorized to wear the Undersea Medical Officer Device, the Fleet Marine Force Warfare Device, Navy Commendation Medal (1 gold star), Joint Achievement Medal, and various unit and service awards. He is an Assistant Professor of Anesthesiology at Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. His academic awards include General Mologne Award for Top Resident at Walter Reed 2017, Paul Mongan Award for Outstanding Military Researcher 2016, Payson-Hampers MD/MBA Award 2009, Merck Manual Award 2009, and Gold Humanism in Medicine 2008.
