Biography

Maj William Hoffman USAF MC is a board-certified neurologist and serves as the Medical Director of Joint Integrated Clinical Medicine, 59th Medical Wing Office of Science and Technology. His clinical and research interests center around aircrew brain health, mental wellness in operational populations, neurological care in aircrew populations, and aeromedical screening. Maj Hoffman also leads research related to toxic exposures and early onset Parkinson’s Disease in service members. He attended Georgetown University School of Medicine and completed a residency in neurology at Brooke Army Medical Center, where he was chief resident and awarded the San Antonio Uniformed Health Education Consortium (SAUHEC) Maj John Berry Resident of the Year. He completed a fellowship in movement disorders at Columbia University Medical Center in New York, NY, where he received clinical training in deep brain stimulation and electromyography-guided botulinum toxin injections for movement disorders. Maj Hoffman completed two years of post-graduate training in aeromedical research under Anthony Tvaryanas MD PhD at the Federal Aviation Administration's Civil Aviation Medical Institute (CAMI).

Maj Hoffman serves as the Brooke Army Medical Center Neurology Residency faculty director of research, where he supervises the research activities of eight resident physicians. He provides research support to ten active-duty USAF neurologists traversing a range of operationally focused topics and oversees multi-disciplinary research efforts focused on readiness. Additionally, Maj Hoffman serves as a faculty advisor for a post-doctoral researcher focused on aircrew mental health and aeromedical screening.

Maj Hoffman is the lead author on multiple operationally relevant academic publications related to aircrew brain health and aeromedical screening in the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Medicine, Military Medicine, Occupational Medicine and others. He is an invited speaker on aircrew health topics with multiple mainstream publications including in Scientific American, Seattle Times, and Flying Magazine. He served on the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) Aviation Rulemaking Committee on Mental Health and testified on his research to the US National Transportation Safety Board in Washington, DC. Maj Hoffman is an affiliated assistant professor of aviation at the University of North Dakota and is the Vice Chair of the Aerospace Medical Association's Mental Health Working Group. He is an Affiliate of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine (IAASM), a recreational runner and an aviation enthusiast.
